13 Laying the Trap
I spend all the next week in touch with Andre by email. But Andre doesnât know it. He thinks heâs emailing a stranger. I run every message past Luis before sending to Andre. I need to make sure I am striking the right balance between mystery and flirtation.
Maybe itâs his Latin heritage, but Luis has a way with romantic emails. By the time heâs done editing my messages, I start to fall for this made-up person myself. After the third email I begin to wonder if Luis is using them as a way to expose a part of himself. Maybe he wants me to see him as someone who deserves to be sought after. The way Iâm seeking after Andre.
Andre is head over heels in love with his secret admirer. But he keeps pressing to meet in real life. I want to wait until weâve finished watching season ten of Drag Race. What if Andre laughs in my face when he finds out that Iâm his missed connection? I could never face him again. I would have to miss the final episodes.
At the next outNproud, Andre shows us the emails Luis and I have been sending him. More and more people have been showing up the closer we get to the end of season ten. Thereâs little or no privacy for the six of us. I have to be careful not to mouth along with the latest email as Geeda reads it to us.
âThe image of your face wipes away all my problems,â Geeda reads from Andreâs phone. âI can still see you dancing in my mind. It sets me free, like a bird gliding on the wind.â
âHeâs laying it on kind of thick,â says Chad. âI mean, heâs only seen you once.â
âWhoâs to say heâs not in the room with us at this very moment?â Lottie says.
âDo you think so?â Andre says. His eyes snap to attention.
âIt makes sense, doesnât it?â Lottie says. âWe only socialize with maybe a third of the people who come here. Most of them arenât here every week.â
âSo, are you going to meet this guy or what?â Luis asks Andre.
âI want to,â Andre says. âBut he keeps putting it off. He wonât even send me a picture of himself.â
âThatâs a red flag if there ever was one,â says Chad.
âChad is right,â Andre says. âThis is the twenty-first century. Even my grandmother knows how to send a selfie.â
âI still think youâre being catfished,â Chad says.
Chad is right, in a way. I might be the person sending the emails. But itâs Luisâs words Andre is falling for.
âI think itâs romantic,â Geeda says.
âWhat do you think I should do, Charlie?â Andre asks.
So he does know my name.
âI donât see the harm in meeting the guy,â I say. âIf heâs not who you think he is, you can just go your separate ways. But be gentle.â
